Dr. Ahmad A.
Hamid Professor and Director of the Masonry
Research Laboratory, Department of Civil and Architectural
Engineering, Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Hamid
has over 28 years of experience as a faculty member, a
Professional Engineer and a consultant in the USA, Canada and
the Middle East. He has served as a member of professional
committees of ACI, ASCE, ASTM and TMS. He is the author or
co-author of over 180 papers and technical reports on the
behavior, design, and retrofit of concrete and masonry
structures. He is a co-author of the textbook " Masonry
structures: Behavior and Design" published by the Masonry
Society in 1999 and is a contributing author of the " Masonry
Designer's Guide" published by TMS/CMR/ACI. Dr. Hamid has
introduced masonry courses at undergraduate and graduate
levels at Drexel University since 1983 and has conducted many
seminars and short courses on engineered masonry. He has
conducted over $1.0 million funded research in the area of
design and retrofit of masonry structures in seismic areas. He
was the Chairman of the Six North American Masonry Conference
that was held at Drexel University in 1993. He acts as a
consultant and expert witness on many masonry investigations
for private industry and government organizations.
Charles E. Furtaw, P.E Registered
as a Professional Engineer in the states of Pennsylvania
(PE-013068), New Jersey (GE 16148), and Delaware (9405) has
worked in the masonry business for 41 years. A graduate of
Lehigh University he worked as a design engineer for Yule,
Stickland, Jordan, and McNee until 1959 when he started as a
project manager for John B. Kelly, Inc. of Pennsylvania. Mr.
Furtaw with masonry experience in many northeastern states
became president in 1977 and eventually part owner in 1984.
The John B. Kelly company was considered the largest masonry
contractor in the north east at this time and did the masonry
construction for all types of commercial construction
including hospitals, office buildings, prisons, power plants,
casinos, schools, manufacturing facilities, and university
buildings. Since 1991 Mr. Furtaw has acted in an advisory
capacity for masonry companies and also provided consulting
services, including reports, for numerous owners and law firms
with regard to building retrofitting and litigation matters.
He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, The
Masonry Society, and the National Society of Professional
Engineers.
